Planning the night scene before the first fixture goes in
Great lighting does so much more than illuminate a space; it sets the scene. The mistake to avoid is lighting everything equally, which flattens a backyard into a parking lot. The better question is what you want to see from the kitchen window at nine in the evening: the water, the waterfall, the stone, the path.
Kirk & Jody Goddard understand the intricacies of artful lighting. They plan it together with the pool, the hardscape and the deck, and they decide what deserves light and what deserves shadow before any fixture is chosen.
Underwater, accent and path lighting
Underwater lighting turns the pool itself into the light source, which is why a lit pool glows blue at dusk. Landscape and outdoor accents then pick out the features around it: the stone coping, a waterfall wall, the face of a fireplace, the steps and the edge of a deck.
Four Seasons gives an outdoor living area a lighting arrangement that accentuates its most beautiful features at night. Fixtures are placed alongside the stonework and the decking as they are built, so the wiring and the mounting points are planned rather than retrofitted.
Lighting for every night of the year
A lighting plan is the one service that works on every night in every season. In summer it carries the swim into the evening. In autumn it lights the kitchen and the fire pit. In winter it makes the fireplace and the stone the view from the house.
